HP to review security

HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT — The International Home Furnishings Market Authority has promised to review security procedures for next month's market in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks.
The group's board, which held its regularly scheduled meeting a few hours after the Sept. 11 attacks (see story, page 2), said representatives would meet privately with local police officials to review market security. Board members said they don't anticipate drastic changes, but said it will be important to make security personnel more visible and reassure marketgoers they are safe.
"I don't think the furniture market would be a target for terrorists … but we have to assure people that we are very security conscious," said Bruce Miller, president of the International Home Furnishings Center.
Market Authority President Judy Mendenhall later issued an open letter to market buyers, exhibitors and media representatives. It reads, in part:
"In light of recent events … I want to ... assure our visitors that we in High Point are eagerly awaiting your arrival for this year's October market. We all feel great sorrow and outrage about the violent acts ... but we also realize that we must go forward and return to normalcy as quickly as possible… . You may rest assured that this will be a safe market for all our guests!"
