Vegas rebate vote delayed

LAS VEGAS — LAS VEGAS — This week's vote on tax breaks for the proposed furniture market center here has been delayed again due to last week's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
The Las Vegas City Council was expected to vote Sept. 19 on a proposal to rebate as much as half the property taxes on the World Market Center project to offset infrastructure costs, a vote already delayed from Sept. 5.
Now the vote is off at least until the next City Council hearing, set for Oct. 3, said Shawn Samson, co-managing partner of the planned $750 million, 7.5 million-square-foot project.
The mayor and the city council had asked developers to meet with city staff and attorneys prior to the Sept. 19 hearing to discuss the project. "We had some (meetings)," Samson said last Friday. "Others were canceled because of the tragic events."
Samson said developers still are scheduled to close before Oct. 16 on acquisition of the first 20 acres of a 57-acre tract for the project.
