Sectional sofas
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 23, 2004
Sectional sofas are most popular with Generation X and Younger Baby Boomer households. Both generations account for 27% of sectional purchases in 2002 and 2003. Gen X'ers spent more, a median of $2,000, while the younger boomers spent less, a median of $1,600.
Sectional buyers have large incomes. Over half have incomes of $75,000 or more, and nearly one-third have incomes of $100,000 or more. Asian-Americans spend the most, a median of $1,700.
Three-fourths of sectionals are covered in fabric, and one-fourth are leather. Half of sectionals are solid in color; 30% are dark-colored.
More households shop for a sectional than actually purchase one. Only two-fifths of sectional shoppers ended up buying one. And shoppers spent more time shopping for the sectional than any of the other five upholstery categories. Nearly two-fifths shopped for one to three months before buying the sectional; nearly one-fourth shopped for four months to a year; and 8% shopped for more than a year.
