HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT— Randall Terry Jr., a minority owner of the International Home Furnishings Center, died last week following a long battle with cancer.
Terry, 69, also was publisher and president of the High Point Enterprise. His family had held an ownership stake in both the newspaper and the IHFC since the 1920s. He was not married and had no children, and it was not immediately clear what would become of his interests in the two entities.
He was one of three owners of the IHFC, which has about 3.5 million square feet of exhibit space and is the High Point market's largest showroom complex. The other owners are Bassett Furniture Inds., which has a 46% stake, and Jefferson-Pilot Corp., a Greensboro-based insurance company.
According to newspaper reports, a sizable chunk of Terry's assets were in the Randall B. Terry Charitable Foundation. He was a major benefactor of North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The school's board of trustees recently voted to name a new animal hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine for Terry. The school said Terry's foundation has contributed more than $8 million to the project.
Terry owned a 50% stake in the Enterprise, which also publishes the Thomasville Times, Archdale-Trinity News and ESP, an entertainment weekly. The remaining 50% is owned by Paxton Media Group, a Paducah, Ky., company that owns several newspapers and a television station.
