Lacquer Craft readying new Dongguan factory

DONGGUAN, China — Chinese case goods manufacturer Lacquer Craft will relocate its southern China operation in June to a new manufacturing complex under construction here.
The facility will make furniture for Lacquer Craft's OEM customers, including Thomasville, which will have a dedicated line.
Production for Legacy Classic, in which Lacquer Craft has an interest, and Universal, for which the company owns marketing rights, now will take place in a new 3 million-square-foot manufacturing and distribution center in Shanghai.
Lacquer Craft's old plant, also in Dongguan, will close. Zoning changes by the Chinese government led to the move, said Mohamad Amini, executive vice president of Lacquer Craft.
"The area is now a hi-tech zone, and the government is building universities and other educational facilities there," he said.
Amini said it was too soon to say how large the new Dongguan plant could be.
"We're taking an opportunity to build a factory more suitable to the types of higher-end product we want to make," he said.
