Wolf readies big store in Frederick

Frederick, Md. — Top 100 furniture store chain Wolf Furniture will move its store here to a new, larger location in January.
The new store will devote 60,000 square feet to lines such as La-Z-Boy, Broyhill, Kingsdown, Klaussner and Pennsylvania House, an increase from the approximately 40,000 square feet in the current store. The new unit will be the largest furniture store in the Frederick region, according to Doug Wolf, the company's fourth-generation president.
Gene Stoltz, vice president of merchandising, said the nine-store chain's new showroom "will follow the successful design of Wolf's Lancaster, Pa., store, which opened in September 2002. It will be a wide-open, modern facility, with clearly defined areas for casual, contemporary, country and traditional furniture styles."
Wolf bought the existing Frederick store 12 years ago and expanded it in stages. The new store — in a former Hechinger's on Route 40 that is undergoing a $2 million interior and exterior renovation — will have a more convenient and inviting layout, said Doug Wolf. The store will have easy access from Route 40 and McCain Drive.
Chairman John Wolf said the retailer's sales associates don't work on commissions.
"They can focus on good customer service, without the pressure often associated with commission salespeople. Because we know many of our customers are parents, we offer child care during peak sales period, so they can shop worry free," he said.
Wolf Furniture, celebrating its 101st anniversary this year, ranked 94th on Furniture/Today's Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores list with furniture, bedding and accessory sales of $59.9 million and total revenues of $64.1 million in 2002.
