Miller: Company's roots run deep

David Perry -- Furniture Today, September 22, 2003

Although he now sits atop one of the nation's most successful bedding specialty stores, Larry Miller still remembers those tough early days in the history of Sit 'n Sleep.

"I know what it's like to be lonely and waiting for a customer," said Miller, the company's president, reflecting on his 25-year history with the sleep shop chain based here. He and his father, Phil, founded the company and built it into one of the nation's most respected sleep shops.

Larry Miller remains the face of the company. "I'll beat anyone's advertised price or your mattress is freeeee!," he shouts in the broadcast advertising that is the company's hallmark.

Lately his son, Drew, has been adding his voice to the "freeeee" message.

"I would love to make it a three-generational business," Miller said. He and his partner, Nelson Bercier, are running the company nowadays.

Miller, 53, admits he's still having fun.

"I'm doing more business than I ever thought possible," he said. "I'm going to stick with it until I'm 90. I love what I do. If someone gave me a pile of money, I wouldn't know what to do with it. It's a wonderful thing to like your job. It's a gift from God. We've had some offers recently, but I'm not interested in selling."
