Parsippany, N.J. — Ira Bakst, co-founder of retail software supplier Storis Management Systems, has sold his equity interests and retired because of health reasons.
Bakst, who was executive vice president and founded Storis in 1989 with Don Surdoval, its president, has been battling cancer. He said his decision to retire was "critical to both my family and myself."
Bakst and Surdoval purchased the rights to the Storis product from Ultimate Corp., where the two met in 1986 and worked with the Storis product.
Bakst headed Storis' sales and marketing departments since its inception and played a major role in developing product. The company serves more than 300 retailers, including more than 20 of the Top 100 furniture stores and two major appliance buying groups. Storis also has installations in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, China and Saudi Arabia.
Bakst will remain with Storis as a consultant for two years.
