Ridgeway, Va. — Reduced demand for floor clocks is leading Pulaski Furniture to cut 70 jobs this summer at its Ridgeway Clocks plant here.
"This is a difficult decision, which we've delayed for some time in the hope that demand for grandfather clocks would increase," said John Wampler, president and chief executive officer. "However, the economic slowdown continues to have a severe impact on our business in Ridgeway, and we must align production with market demand. Grandfather clocks are items that many consumers defer purchasing when the economy slows."
The layoff will leave about 900 employees at Pulaski facilities in Virginia and Missouri.
"We plan for this adjustment to return the plant to a full schedule," Wampler said, adding that reducing the workforce now will strengthen the jobs of remaining employees. Those laid off will receive severance pay and help in getting unemployment benefits.
