Trend-setting on Italy's border

By Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, April 28, 2003

Proposte is considered a pearl among fabric trade shows not only because of the carefully restricted size and beauty of its venue on Italy's Lake Como, but also because it sets trends in furnishings fabrics. Consequently, buyers are gathering here in May for the 11th edition of the show, which includes 109 exhibitors, despite unprecedented uncertainty related to global politics, world markets and textile trade policies.

Trade shows are a good remedy for discouraging times, after all. Spirits are lifted when people get to visit with colleagues and realize that not even global politics can stop the creative process.

There is also encouragement available in the form of recent market research that Proposte's organizers say shows that in only 15 years, 60% of the world's Western population will be more than 60 years old. The same survey indicated that those 60-year-olds, if offered a choice, will choose to spend their money on durable goods and a comfortable lifestyle — a choice that bodes well for the furnishings fabric industry since those consumers will probably give up apparel purchases in favor of a comfortable home or a holiday at a good hotel.

Just across the border in Chiasso, Switzerland, more than 120 exhibitors, including more than 30 designers, will be exhibiting in Palapenz Hall at the fifth annual Scoperta fabric fair, which for the first time includes the Comocreainterni design show.

Dozens of fabric suppliers from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent are introducing product at Scoperta, which is organized by the Trade Link Co.

Happily, fabric buyers don't have to choose between Proposte and Scoperta. They can enjoy both unique shows — separated only by a 10-minute shuttle trip (bring your passport).

Social events are planned for both venues. On Wednesday, May 7, a football match will be held on the fair grounds to mark the fifth anniversary of the Scoperta show. The match "will ensure that Scoperta 2003 will be remembered as more than just another exhibition," said Bill Davis, the show's managing director.

On Thursday, May 8, attendees at Proposte will be treated to an orchestral music program at the ancient Villa Erba, a traditional highlight of the show.

I feel lucky every May — glad for another chance to see friends and colleagues, glad that I get to travel here and glad I can make a living around the pretty things you buy and sell.

I would enjoy hearing from you about what you see at these shows. E-mail me at sandrews@reedbusiness.com. In the meantime, enjoy your time here and I wish you safe travels and great business.
