Amyx Inds. liquidating
Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, May 19, 2003
West Plains, Mo. — Wood dining furniture producer Amyx Inds. has sent a letter to its sales representatives saying the company is being liquidated.
Owners Bill Simmons and Mike Walsh faxed a notice last week and said they would also notify major customers. Reached by phone, an Amyx official said that Simmons and Walsh would have no further comment for the press.
"All of us have worked to salvage Amyx, and the harder we worked, the more business has declined to the point we are unable to sustain operations," the faxed letter said. "There is no intention to seek bankruptcy for Amyx," the owners wrote, adding that they believe the liquidation will allow them to pay off liabilities as well as the sales reps' accrued commissions.
The company was founded in 1944 by the Amyx family and Ted Gullic, a former St. Louis Browns baseball player, as a baseball bat manufacturer for the military for recreational use, and later for major league baseball and general recreation.
In the early 1960s, the company started a residential furniture line and has become known for oak and ash casual dining as well as rockers and swivel desk chairs.
Amyx's owners also own Walsh & Simmons Seating, a commercial furniture business, but that enterprise was not mentioned in the letter.
