New London, N.C. — The American Society of Furniture Designers has awarded the 2003 David Kline Memorial Scholarship to Trilokesh Rana, a senior at Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Mich. Rana won the $4,000 scholarship partly for designing a table he called Kosi.
Furniture hardware producer Kaba Ilco co-sponsored the scholarship competition. Nominees from 15 universities and colleges were asked to submit a "mini portfolio" of sketches, renderings and details of one furniture design project, as well as a written essay.
"Rana's table design has a visually pleasing, exotic architectural form which appears to be fresh and original. "The Kosi symmetry and simple construction led to its manufacturability," said Ted Rittersdorf, ASFD vice president and a furniture designer with Steve Hodges Associates. He, as well as designers Phillip Behrens of Natura Design and Scott Colley of McDaniel and Colley judged the competition.
