'Sound-infused furniture' is here

Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, February 10, 2003

The product Michael Feldman was touting at the Consumer Electronics Show here this month didn't look like a piece of furniture, but he insisted it was.

After all, he reasoned, you can sit or lie down on it. And perhaps most importantly, you can play video games and watch television on it.

Feldman, president of Pyramat Inc., calls his product a "sound-infused piece of furniture" that lets someone experience booming sound without cranking up the volume.

"Sound literally rumbles through the user," he said. "People like the fact that they can sit in a Pyramat for hours without getting a sore back and without having to constantly change their position."

The Pyramat is a foam mat that can be configured for a sitting or reclining position, and folds for storage. The rumbling comes from three speakers (including a sub-woofer) and a 50-watt amplifier packed into the triangle-shaped head of the product. Sound from any game system, television, stereo, CD player or MP3 player can be piped through the piece.

"We're creating a whole new category," he said. The $149 item already is available on Amazon.com.

Initially, Feldman hopes to place the product in consumer electronics stores, but said he may exhibit at the High Point market in hopes of landing some furniture store placements.

"In the next five to 10 years, it will increasingly become standard for electronics to be embedded in home furnishings," he predicted.
