Indian rug exhibition set for Atlanta market

Atlanta — Images of India, an exhibition of hand-woven rugs inspired by Indian art and culture, will be on display during the National Oriental Rug Show here in January.
NORS is part of the International Rug Market held Jan. 17–19 at AmericasMart Atlanta. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open the exhibition on Friday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m.
Images of India will be on display on the lobby level of the Merchandise Mart at AmericasMart. Showroom hours will be 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The exhibition is a collaborative effort of the United Nations Development Program and the government of India's Development Commissioner for Handicraft, Ministry of Textiles, organized by the Carpet Export Promotion Council, chaired by Kuldeep Wattal. It is supported by the Oriental Rug Importers Assn. and by AmericasMart.
Area rugs in the collection are based on cultural sources reflecting India's 5,000-year artistic heritage, including cave paintings, Kundan jewelry, folk art, architecture and Jamdani textile designs.
More than 90 new designs featured in the exhibition will be available for purchase by retailers from participating ORIA members.
"The carpet industry continues to be a vibrant sector of the Indian economy, and has considerable potential for growth," said Tino Joshi, Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles.
Participating ORIA members include Aminco, Atlas Rug, Ebisons Harounian Imports, Feizy, Harounian Rugs International, Kas Oriental Rugs, Marcella, Master-looms, MER, Momeni, Neman International, Nejad Oriental Rugs, Noonoo, Obeetee, Par-Inco, Safavieh and Shalom Bros.
