New group sets N.Y. rug market for Sept. 19–23

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 2, 2004

Metro Rug Alliance, a new trade organization, will conduct its first Metro Market Week Sept. 19–23.

Buyers will be offered free transportation in and around metro New York/New Jersey to visit more that 30 rug companies that are MRA members.

Formed earlier this year, Metro Rug Alliance is a collaboration of producers and importers based in the greater New York City region.

"We are very pleased to announce not only the formation of this organization, but to inaugurate our first market week," said David Samad, president of Samad and head of the MRA planning committee. "This event will demonstrate the resilience and leadership of our industry."

Bill Ward, CEO of Obeetee, said the event offers an opportunity for retailers to do their fall buying and at the same time have a great time in New York.

Metro Market Week plans include:

  • Discounted hotel bookings at leading area hotels.

  • A drawing for 10 pairs of tickets to a Broadway show.

  • A market gala at a top New York venue.

  • A sweepstakes for buyers to win cash credits to use with MRA vendors.

Further market events and details will be announced later.
