Edmonton, Alberta — The Brick will donate C$325,000 to Sport Central, a non-profit group that gives sporting equipment to needy children in central and northern Alberta and the Northern Territories.
Canada's largest furniture and bedding retailer made the announcement during the 15th edition of The Brick Super Novice Invitational Hockey Tournament, held here June 30–July 4.
The company will contribute C$65,000 a year for the next five years. In recognition, the organization will be called The Brick Sport Central.
"We are very happy to increase our support of this organization," said Kim Yost, president and CEO of The Brick. "Our founder, Bill Comrie, has said that he developed the skills that made him successful during his years as a player and coach in amateur hockey. Thus, we believe that underprivileged kids should get an equal chance to practice their favorite game and, besides their physical abilities, develop team spirit and other essential atitudes."
The Brick Sport Central works through a number of agencies, including Big Sisters and Big Brothers, Boys and Girls Clubs, schools, and municipal and provincial government departments. In addition to hockey gear, it provides soccer, volleyball and softball equipment, and bicycles. As a result, over 15,000 kids have been able to participate in sports since the organization was founded in December 1991.
