Specialty stores flex muscles

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 13, 2007

Bedding specialty stores, the largest channel of distribution in the bedding arena, once again flexed their muscles last year.

The bedding stores on this year's list — ranked by bedding revenues in 2006 — together posted a 17.7% sales gain, easily the best by any bedding distribution channel.

The furniture stores on the list boosted their revenues by 13.4%, while the discount department stores upped their revenues by 12.6%.

Overall, the bedding specialists accounted for 58% of the bedding revenues generated by the Top 25. Furniture stores finished a distant second on that list, accounting for 22% of total revenues.

Bedding specialty stores top four other growth lists:

  • The Sleep Train's 70.2% revenue growth made it the fastest-growing retailer based on percentage change in dollars. 1800mattress.com (up 37.5%) ranks No. 2.

  • Sleep Train's net growth in dollars — $134.8 million — made it tops in that category. Select Comfort is No. 2 with net growth in dollars of $88 million.

  • And Sleep Train's net growth in units — 79 — puts in on top in that category. The Ashley Furniture HomeStores network is just behind, with net growth in units of 77.

  • 1800mattress.com posted a 108.9% change in units, to top that list. Sleep Train was second with a 65.3% change.
