New York — ABC Carpet & Home celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love with a promotion of hand-woven, semi-antique and vintage rugs that reflect the groovy mood of 1967.
The rugs, in the retailer's flagship store here, were grouped into nine categories, evoking the '60s counter-culture: Psychedelic, Hippy Chic, Groovy, Flower Power, Kaleidoscopic, Day-Glo, Technicolor, Far-Out and Shag.
"Our aim was to update the perception of antique Oriental rugs, commonly referred to as traditional, by showcasing their diversity and contemporary appeal through the implementation of an innovative promotion that resonates with the modern lifestyles of today's consumer," said Angela Gruszka, public relations manager for ABC.
The promotion ran through August on ABC's sixth floor Oriental Rug Department. The retail price range was $699 to $5,999.
"This was an excellent representation of the extensive style range of Oriental carpets," said Graham Head, vice chairman of ABC Carpet at ABC Carpet & Home. "The complexity of the designs and intellectual use of color suggests the idea of rugs as art."
The Summer of Love refers to 1967, when people flocked to San Francisco to join in a countercultural revolution of new ideas and behaviors.
The period evoked an explosion of creative expression and spirituality that brought about a new psychedelic aesthetic in art, fashion and popular culture, and also spurred criticism in more conventional quarters.
