San Diego — Kathy Ireland Home by Martin plans to move into a single, larger factory in Tijuana, Mexico, by the end of October, doubling its capacity there.
The move into the 150,000-square-foot facility follows a fire in late July that destroyed a 50,000-square-foot building housing the finishing, boxing and assembly departments, as well as administrative offices. It was one of three KI/Martin buildings in Tijuana. Finishing equipment is being installed in the new factory.
The consolidated facility will allow for more efficient manufacturing, with raw materials coming in at one end and finished, boxed goods loaded onto trucks at the other, the maker of home office and entertainment furniture said.
Finished goods will help stock KI/Martin's 250,000-square-foot warehouse in San Diego. The consolidation affects about 30% of the company's line. The remaining 70% is made in Asia.
