High Point — Cheap Trick, Kool & The Gang and Robert Cray will headline the first three Stars Under the Stars concerts at the April High Point Market, according to the High Point Market Authority.
Kool & The Gang kicks off the series on the market's opening day of Monday, April 7, with their fusion of jazz, R&B, funk and pop that led to such hits as "Celebration," "Joanna" and "Jungle Boogie."
Rock group Cheap Trick, whose most popular songs include "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender" and "The Flame," will perform Tuesday.
Grammy-winning blues guitarist Cray will take the stage Wednesday.
Concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. each evening in the Showplace tent, with doors open at 7 p.m. The events are open to market attendees age 15 or older with a valid market badge and picture ID.
Brian Casey, Market Authority president and CEO, said additional entertainment, along with free food and drink, will be provided during market. To register to receive updates to the schedule, go to www.highpointmarket.org.
At a Market Authority board meeting last week, the group also outlined plans for an internship program with Bennett College, a historically black women's college in Greensboro, N.C. The program will focus on marketing and show operations.
High Point's next premarket will take place March 3–4, according to board member Kevin O'Connor, president and CEO of Samson Marketing, the parent company of Universal, Legacy Classic and Craftmaster.
O'Connor said he expects greater attendance than at the last premarket. About 25 companies will fund the next event, compared with about 15 in August.
