1800mattress.com offers 'test naps'

New York — Most bedding retailers encourage consumers to lie down on the mattresses that they are considering for purchase. But now 1800mattress.com, based here, is taking that invitation to the next level: It is offering consumers a chance to enjoy a 30-minute "test nap" on the bed of their choice.
"It seemed essential to offer 'test naps' on the products that our customers will spend approximately one-third of their life on," commented John O'Connell, senior vice president of merchandise and retail sales. "Approximately 50% of our customers want to lie on a mattress before they make a purchasing decision, and this program takes that concept one step further. The test nap will ensure that the mattress and consumer is a match made in slumber."
The retailer, which has 46 locations across the country, is encouraging customers to bring their favorite pillow or blanket to their local showroom to re-create their home sleep environment. The company's sleep consultants also will be offering customers a sleep mask so they can shut out the light and prepare to nod off.
O'Connell said the test naps are a logical move for the retailer. "Whether it is luxury cars, designer handbags, jewelry or other luxury purchases, there is a trial period to ensure synergy between customer and product," he said. "Sleep is the ultimate luxury, which impacts health, mood and productivity."
