Voluntary recall in cooperation with CPSC

ATLANTA — Simmons is voluntarily recalling about 20,000 crib mattresses, some of which are too small and can create a gap that babies can get stuck in.
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the company is recalling four models of Simmons Kids mattresses sold at Pottery Barn Kids and nursery furniture retailers from July 2006 through May of this year.
No injuries have been reported, although Simmons Kids and the CPSC have received one report of a 6-month-old becoming wedged between a mattress and the crib frame. The parents removed the baby without injury.
The affected mattresses have a law tag sewn onto their edges with the date of manufacturer and in most cases one of these numbers: H59044.15.0014, M59082.15.0002, M59027.15.0002 or M59065.15.0006.
According to Simmons, the crib mattresses are required to have a minimum width of 27 ¼ inches, and the affected products fall short of that by one-sixteenth to one-quarter of an inch. The company said it has implemented a new design and manufacturing process to prevent such an error from happening again.
Of the 20,000 mattresses recalled, just over 1% are expected to be defective, the company said.
