Universal awarded patent for TV chest

HIGH POINT — Full-line importer Universal Furniture has been awarded a U.S. Design Patent for a bedroom chest of drawers that incorporates storage for audio-visual equipment.
The chest incorporates a hinged, drop-down drawer that covers a recessed cavity that houses a power strip and has an opening in the back. The opening allows for component wires to be linked to the TV, cable or satellite hookup, electrical outlet and the like.
The dresser design was created by Stephen Giles, senior vice president of merchandising, and designer Mark Polich.
“Most consumers have televisions in their bedrooms, but not everyone wants an oversized armoire or open-shelf TV stand,” Giles said. “(And) dressers don't provide areas for satellite boxes, DVD players and related equipment.”
The now-patented design was introduced in October 2006 as part of the Milford Square collection and is now available in all 17 of Universal's bedroom collections.
